At DOC, We’re All Conversants

Conference. Speaker. Sponsor. Attendee.

At DOC, we’ve deliberately eliminated these terms from our vocabulary. Language shapes expectations, and traditional conference terminology evokes exactly what we’re working to transcend: passive audiences, one-way presentations, and transactional interactions.

Gathering. Faculty. Partner. Conversant.

We founded DOC to reimagine what professional events can become, starting with the words we use. We choose “gathering” over “conference” because it signals collaboration rather than consumption. “Faculty” replaces “speaker” because it emphasizes teaching and learning rather than performance. “Partner” supplants “sponsor” because we exclusively collaborate with organizations that share our mission of advancing longevity science—companies that contribute substantive value to our mission and community.

The most significant change addresses the problematic term “attendee.” Our community comprises accomplished scientists and physicians who typically take part in events as speakers, not passive observers. We face the enviable challenge of designing programming worthy of a room filled with potential keynote speakers and panel leaders.

Rather than relegating participants to “attendee” status, we designate everyone as Conversants. This reflects our fundamental design principle: DOC operates as an ongoing conversation where every participant has both the right and opportunity to contribute meaningfully.

Our Faculty Conversants catalyze and guide discussions, but we also identify subject-matter Conversants for each topic and actively integrate their expertise into our programming. We reserve nearly half our agenda for community-driven conversations, creating an environment that resembles an intellectual salon rather than a traditional industry conference.

The result transforms the typical conference dynamic. Instead of a few speaking to many, we create the space where knowledge flows multi-directionally, where relationships form organically, and where the collective wisdom of the room drives the conversation.

If this approach to professional development and community building resonates with you, we’d welcome your participation in our next gathering.
