Clinical Breakthroughs and AI | David T. Jones, M.D. Joins DOC 2025 Faculty

Throughout his notable career, behavioral neurologist David T. Jones, M.D. has expanded the therapeutics, detection, and clinical care of neurodegenerative disorders. As the Director of the Mayo Clinic Neurology Artificial Intelligence Program, Jones’ unique expertise in artificial intelligence and cognitive and behavioral neurology has expanded early detection and treatment options for neurodegenerative diseases and other conditions affecting brain aging.

With neurological diseases such as Alzheimer’s, early detection is critical. Jones and his team employ AI-driven tools to read scans, including EEGs (electroencephalogram) — captured with electrodes along the scalp — which measure electrical activity in the brain and can show early signs of neurological shifts. These can help clinicians deliver early interventions to patients, from managing symptoms to potentially slowing cognitive decline. “We do believe diagnosing early and accurately is one of the best ways to provide the best possible medical care,” he said.

Jones and his team of researchers developed an AI tool called StateViewer, which is used across the Mayo Clinic to type and detect nine different neurodegenerative diseases, including Lewy body dementia and Alzheimer’s disease, by analyzing fluorodeoxyglucose PET (positron emission tomography) scans. The program has an 88 percent accuracy at correctly pinpointing the neurological type, according to a recent Neurology paper co-authored by Jones.

Jones received his M.D. from Georgetown University School of Medicine, completed his research fellowship in neuroimaging, and was a Fellow, RST Behavioral Neurology, with the Mayo Clinic College of Medicine. He is an investigator in the Alzheimer’s Disease Research Center, co-Director of the Normal Pressure Hydrocephalus Clinic at the Mayo Clinic, and an assistant professor of neurology and radiology. He has earned numerous awards and honors, including the de Leon Prizes in Neuroimaging, and serves as a Board Advisor with the American Brain Foundation. Additionally, he has authored more than 200 publications, with his work recognized by the Alzheimer’s Association, Mayo Clinic, and multiple national research programs.

We are delighted to welcome Dr. Jones to our growing group of DOC 2025 Faculty.
