Doc 2024

Building a Community Committed to Truth in Medicine

In October 2024, over 200 leaders in science, business, and culture convened in Napa for the inaugural DOC, bound by a shared commitment to Truth in Medicine. Featuring world-class researchers, clinicians, and thought leaders, the gathering reimagined how science is communicated and scaled. The result was the formation of a potent new community: DOC.

For our inaugural DOC, we fundamentally rethought traditional program elements. To place science as the hero, we recruited two dozen world-class medical researchers and clinicians, asking them to focus on three things in their work: The opportunities their research augurs, the obstacles they face scaling their work, and the asks they had for the DOC community.

Our Faculty delivered, as did our Specialists — leaders in business and culture who added context and insights to DOC’s core mission of scaling great science.

But it was the community that really came through,

embracing our Faculty’s work and supporting it in ways we’re still learning about.

The Living Room Lab

At the heart of the DOC experience, the Living Room Lab showcased science-driven, early-stage health companies dedicated to understanding key aspects of health optimization. In this interactive testing suite the community was able to measure, monitor, and gain insights into their longevity and health using advanced, scientifically validated tools.

Findings & Ways Forward

We noticed several consistent themes emerging from the DOC 2024. Science is changing at a nearly incomprehensible speed, and the feeling in the room is that we’re at a tipping point where a small group of committed leaders can affect significant change.

One critical theme was the under-recognized role of women in health, from insufficient funding and research to their underrepresentation in clinical trials—a focus for one of the working groups recently created after the gathering.

Lisa Joy, co-creator of West World, with Dr. Jordan Shlain of DOC and Private Medical.

AI’s impact on health was another central topic. Speakers like Michael Howell and Lisa Joy explored its possibilities, while Jordan Shlain noted that AI and advanced diagnostics bring us closer to “seeing around the corner.”
