Longevity Science | Rachel Sarnoff, M.D., M.Sc., Joins DOC 2026 Faculty

The evolving science of the gut-brain connection has shaped Rachel Sarnoff M.D., M.Sc.’s clinical and research career. A Health Sciences Assistant Professor of Medicine and board-certified internist at UCLA, Sarnoff focuses on Disorders of Gut-Brain Interaction (DGBI) — common yet complex conditions such as irritable bowel syndrome that sit at the intersection of the microbiome, immune system, nervous system, and psychological health. She founded UCLA’s DGBI–Internal Medicine Clinic, where she leverages a multi-system, whole-person approach for digestive care.

Sarnoff began studying the microbiome as a medical student in the lab of Dr. Martin Blaser, investigating links between gut bacteria and early-onset colon cancer — work she later discussed on CBS This Morning. She went on to design a physician-scientist training pathway at UCLA, completing advanced interdisciplinary clinical training under neurogastroenterologists, GI psychologists, nutritionists, and integrative digestive health practitioners while earning a Master of Science in Clinical Research.

Her research examines brain-gut-microbiome signaling, immune activation, and sex-related differences in DGBI. She has published in journals including Neuropharmacology and Neurogastroenterology & Motility, and has delivered institutional continuing medical education lectures at UCLA as well as national presentations focused on gut-brain science.

In addition to her specialty practice, Sarnoff practices primary care. She views digestive health as central to systemic inflammation, metabolic resilience, cognitive vitality, and overall healthspan.

Sarnoff received her M.D. from NYU Grossman School of Medicine, completed her residency and chief residency at UCLA, and is a co-investigator within the NIH-funded Chang-Mayer SCORE Program.
