A New Home for DOC

Welcome back to The DOCUMENT, your connection to DOC!

Since our last edition, we’ve revamped our site and added dynamic media elements, including select videos from last year’s sessions. Limited invitations for DOC 2025 have begun to go out to a select group of DOC alumni, as well as to new members of our community. If you are interested in joining us, please request an invitation here. If you’ve been invited, be sure to accept your invitation before we close registration, which will happen as soon as the room is full!

Our latest post on our new site is “Looking Back And Forward.” It marks a bold new phase for DOC. It captures the palpable energy in the room—investments ignited, partnerships formed, and initiatives like Eat Real picking up steam. What truly stood out was seeing brilliant minds from different fields finding common ground and forging lasting relationships. As we look ahead to 2025, our mission remains clear: to scale innovative, high-quality science in longevity and healthcare while amplifying its core truths.

We’re hard at work shaping the 2025 program, which will focus on the science of longevity and feature three thematic pillars: Clinical Breakthroughs, AI, and Women’s Health. We’re excited to announce several new Faculty members:

Elissa Epel, Ph.D. is an international expert on stress, well-being, and optimal aging and a best-selling author of The Telomere Effect and The Stress Prescription. She is a Professor in the Department of Psychiatry & Behavioral Sciences, at The University of California, San Francisco, where she is Vice Chair of Psychology and directs the UCSF Aging, Metabolism, and Emotions Center. Epel’s work directly addresses our core theme of longevity science, as well as clinical breakthroughs in the field of psychiatry, particularly as it relates to aging.

Mike Krieger is the Chief Product Officer of Anthropic, one of the most valuable private startups in the world and a leader in artificial intelligence. Krieger was a co-founder of Instagram and CTO of Facebook. At DOC, Krieger will focus on how his work in AI directly impacts research and innovation in health and longevity.

Daisy Robinton, Ph.D. launched biotech company Oviva Therapeutics with the vision to help women lead longer, healthier lives through the development of therapeutics to extend ovarian function and female healthspan. She advises multiple startups and non-profits, including XPRIZE, Dior, and SHE Media. Robinton’s focus on clinical breakthroughs in women’s health will be the focus of her Faculty tenure at DOC.

Kari C Nadeau, M.D., Ph.D. is Professor of medicine, climate, and population studies at Harvard’s schools of Medicine and Public Health. She also serves as the Chair of Harvard’s Department of Environmental Health. Nadeau has developed a novel assay of microplastic levels in the bloodstream – a clinical breakthrough that will be the focus of her presentation at DOC.

Michael Snyder, Ph.D., of Stanford Medicine’s Department of Genetics, is a leader in the field of functional genomics and proteomics, and one of the major participants of the ENCODE project, a scientific initiative aimed at identifying all functional elements within the human genome. His work has led to multiple clinical breakthroughs in disease risk assessment and personalized medicine.

Welcome to all new DOC Faculty – you can keep track of them all here.

News of Note

  • Congrats to DOC 2024 Faculty Dr. Stephanie Kuku on the launch of her newsletter, Health Bytes. Kuku describes Health Bytes as “Your go-to guide for health, well-being & optimization — bite-sized and to the point.” Thanks for sharing a glimpse into your quest for evidence-based solutions for a long, healthy life. We look forward to reading more!
  • DOC’s non-profit partner Eat Real has launched in Washington, and celebrated the DOC community’s extraordinary generosity in a press release last month.
  • The editors at Retraction Watch and The Conversation teamed up to investigate the flood of bogus research papers, finding that at least 55,000, and possibly up to hundreds of thousands of fake papers are clogging up the world’s scientific literature.
  • The New York Times covered the rise of longevity clinics, noting there are now as many as 600 such clinics in the US alone. The paper also notes that physicians are self-medicating…on Ozempic.
  • New York Next covered DOC curator Jordan Shlain’s practice: Concierge Medicine Is Booming. “I’m 70% doctor, 15% psychologist, 10% rabbi, 4% hairdresser and 1% friend,” Shlain told the outlet.
  • Speaking of Dr. Shlain, catch up on his prodigious output here. His latest, “The Truth Is Not True,” covers the paradox of evolving knowledge: “The absence of final answers doesn’t diminish the value of asking better questions. It merely requires humility to recognize that today’s answer may become tomorrow’s question, and the pride we take in our knowledge should never exceed our willingness to revise it.”
  • A Stanford research team has developed a generative AI tool called Evo 2 that is trained on a dataset that includes all known living species. “Evo 2 is able to generate – to write – new genetic code that has never existed before.” We’ll be exploring the impact of AI on health throughout the DOC 2025 program.
