DOC’s Special Guests Revealed

When we launched our program last month, we left space for a few “very special guests.” We can now confirm our final three DOC Specialists.

Venture capital legend Vinod Khosla, known for his bold insights and industry-shaping investments, will join us for an illuminating conversation on the convergence of artificial intelligence and healthcare—topics he recently addressed in a thought-provoking manifesto. With his unfiltered opinions and deep understanding of both sectors, this session with Khosla promises to be a rare opportunity to hear from one of Silicon Valley’s most influential voices.

Lisa Joy, the visionary co-creator, writer, and director behind Westworld and Fallout, will join us for a captivating late-night discussion on the intersection of science, technology, and storytelling. Known for her mind-bending narratives that explore the limits of artificial intelligence and the future of humanity, Joy will delve into how cutting-edge technologies not only shape our realities but also the way we construct cultural narratives. This promises to be an intriguing exploration of where science fiction meets the human condition.

Dr. Darshak Sanghavi, M.D., representing ARPA-H—the federal government’s multi-billion-dollar initiative aimed at advancing transformative biomedical and health research—will join us to conclude DOC on Saturday. Together, we’ll explore DOC’s mission to scale groundbreaking science and discuss strategic approaches to funding these visionary efforts.

DOC Faculty And Community News

Owlstone Medical, a featured Living Room Lab partner, announced a research collaboration with the FDA last month. The collaboration will develop methods to identify individual chemicals in breath to identify disease biomarkers and the future development of portable breath diagnostic devices like those Owlstone will be demonstrating at DOC.

Speaking of the FDA, the agency cleared another two research-backed mental health digital therapeutics last month. Dr. Adam Gazzaley, a DOC Faculty member, is a leader in digital therapeutics and will focus his time at DOC on the topic.

Faculty member Dr. Eric Verdin is quoted in a piece covering a Nature article about the inherent limitations of human lifespan. “What this paper will hopefully do is impose a reality check on the field,” Verdin said. “Talking about things that are unattainable…detracts from the serious work that can be done now.”

Have you signed up for DOC Curator Dr. Jordan Shlain’s newsletter? If not, you’ve missed his posts on social nutrition, pleasure vs. happiness, and “psychological sunglasses,” among many gems.

Faculty member Dr. Laura Esserman made a statement with this decision to boycott a conference in Texas over the state’s approach to abortion policy.
